Beyond Beauty – Carnivorous Plants

When I was little, I saw a pretty scary movie with a carnivorous orchid. The strange plant was surrounding a house and eating people inside it… Creepy… this and The Birds were the movies that shocked me as a child… now, I’m afraid of birds… I can’t say if a carnivorous plant can scare me, because I only saw them in pictures… and they look wonderful. Another mystery of nature. :)

Don’t worry… these ones only eat bugs ;) I think :P Most of them were found on Sarracenia.com.

Pinguicula Titan

Aldrovanda

On Sarracenia.com you can also find detailed information about each one of these plants, but… as a resume:

Carnivorous plants are flowering plants with the ability to capture and digest animals as a source of nitrogen. (they have a clear means of capturing the prey; while in the captivity of the plant, the prey dies and the plant digests the prey and assimilates the nutrients). As a result of a constant research, botanists have described till this day about 670 species and subspecies of carnivorous plants. Wonderful and mysterious, they live in wetlands and bog areas, and extremely love sunlight.

Drosera capensis bend

Drosera peltata

  3. Beautiful! Unfortunately(?) for the poor insects it seems that beauty attracts unconditionally.

Even if it may harm you you can’t get enough of something beautiful. And if you manage to escape you want back. Desperately.

Funny how nature works, isn’t it?

  4. what you said is so true… beauty attracts us no matter what it will follow. even when it’s dangerous…. maybe more when it’s dangerous :) )

  5. I’m always right am i not? :)

I can even take it further … beautiful outside means nothing if it’s not beautiful inside as well.

The real beauty must is inside, judging by looks alone is usually deceiving.

  6. Marvellous monstrous plants :p
