Many of us decorate eggs and wait for the Easter bunny… but that is not all about Easter…

The Easter Fire

The Easter Fire is a custom of pagan origin spread all over Europe. It is a symbol of victory, the victory of beautiful and sunny spring over the cold days of winter. The fire is lit usually on the top of the mountains – Easter mountain, Osterberg – and it is obtained from wood by friction. In Germany, the Easter fire consists from gathering all the Christmas trees and burning them into a huge fire, a sign for everyone to leave behind winter and prepare for spring.

The Easter Wells

This is one of the most beautiful Easter traditions in Frankonia, Switzerland. People clean the fountains and decorate them with painted eggs, paper streamers, streamers tied in bunches, garlands and spruce, and also real flowers.  The significance of Easter Wells is connected to the symbol of water as the life-giving element for the arid plateau of the Alps.

Pomlazka

pomlazka

This is an Easter custom from Moravia, the Czech Republic. Each year, in the Easter Monday, boys are whipping girls with willow twigs, decorated with colorful ribbons in order to ensure their beauty and fertility. The whipping or "pomlazka" is also considered to be a way of getting rid of all the bad things that had accumulated during the winter season. From what I read, it doens't seem to be a good spanking, but more like a ceremony.
